What’s (been) going on?

Jesus! Well, it’s April tomorrow and Good Friday the day after. I don’t know where the time goes… the days crawl but the weeks fly by. Anyway, I thought I’d let you know what I’ve been up to this year outside of work hours, before any April foolery. Nothing personal, just a couple of web projects on the side…

Automatik Productions

This one I designed for my long-time friend and Melbourne-based producer and DJ, Steve Mowat, aka Matik. Steve and I came up with a bold new identity which set the basis for the site’s structure. Building an HTML5-flavoured WordPress template, I’ve allowed Steve to record his thoughts, creations and findings with ease. With a photo gallery and an emphasis on connecting through social media, this is a hub for both the industry and the public to connect with Matik. A monochrome scheme and confident type makes the site feel like you can understand the professionalism, class and attention to detail that is Matik, before you’ve even heard his beats.

Marcus Cobbledick

I’ve been honoured to work with Marcus and help him to establish his presence online. He has a fantastic body of work containing iconic poster design, motion graphics and title sequences that make you sit back and simply say, ‘wow’. He also designed this site himself, pixel-for-pixel, before getting me to write the code. Alright, I’ll stop writing and let the work speak for itself.

Simon O’Shea · Web Design Folio [Coming Soon]

Yep, that’s me! I’ve finished designing a new portfolio site that is dead simple and uses JavaScript to randomly organise a grid of some of the best sites that I’ve had a chance to work on over the last three years. I just have to finish writing a few spiels, cross the Ts and dot the… lowercase Js. Should be online next week.

Simantic Photos

That’s right, after a two year hiatus, I’ve decided this March that it was time to rekindle the love of my photography… blog. Hoping to redesign the section within the coming months. Enjoy.

Web Portrait

web portrait

Here is my web portrait for Paolo, one of my classmates at uni. The brief was to construct an interactive/non-linear ‘portrait’ of someone else in the class using web technologies, Flash and/or HTML/CSS. I did Paolo’s, Cham did mine. You can see the others too.

Last Ride

I thought that seeing as though this is my blog, I should start putting up some of my work. Previously, I’ve left this sort of thing to my folio site, but now that I am back studying I have far less time on my hands to build static folio pages. So I thought I could start showcasing some stuff that I do both at work (Madman) and at uni (RMIT). Is that ok with you? In future, I may move posts of this nature to a secondary part of the blog, but for now, let’s get started…

Let’s kick off with a site that I did at Madman, that we launched this time last month. It was for the upcoming feature film, Last Ride, directed by Glendyn Ivin and starring Hugo Weaving and Tom Russell. The film is beautiful and is fairly sparse in terms of scenery and dialogue, so I think it’s appropriate that the website matches. The director Glendyn Ivin, was a pleasure to work with and actually had a big part in the way the site looked — the background images are photos he took during the period that they shot the film. He also came up with the great idea of having a KML file that you can import into Google Earth, which features words and images of locations that the main characters, Kev and Chook, travel through in the film. Glendyn also posted the following screenshots of the site on his blog, which is linked below.

Having not done a full Flash site in some time, it was a bit of a challenge getting back into the swing of things, but my friend and colleague Stuart was an invaluable resource and helped iron out a few bugs, especially to do with preloaders. It was also a challenge for the key-art designer Marcus, who had to miraculously fit the front page key art into a widescreen format for me. Anyway, I think it turned out alright and Flash was definitely the right format for the experience. To use Glendyn’s complement, ‘it doesn’t feel like a website’.
