8-bit of fun

There are a fair few old-style arcade games that have been redeveloped for the web. Here are three of the more clever ones.

Frogger spoof Grogger was developed by 27DC for the City of Melbourne to promote pedestrian and alcohol safety (it was featured in this month’s Desktop magazine), Left 4k Dead re-hashes an old zombie-fighting game in under 4 kilobytes of Java, and Defender of the Favicon brings a space game into the 16×16 pixel favicon in your browser.

Really nice work. And to think that they’re literally around the corner, on Cambridge Street. Might have to check ‘em out.

Plug to my peeps

nhd

I have a lot of creative friends. People who I have met over the years, long-time pals and housemates. Today I was blown away by the image above, by my friend Nick and his crew. You can check out his website over there on the right. While you’re at it, check out Chris’ pics, Tris’ words, Steve’s sounds and Dan’s sketches… amongst others. Did I forget you? Let me know, and I’ll put you up over there.

Of course, these are just a few folk who happen to have stuff on the intertubes. There are plenty of galleries out there too. And, because it’s that time of the year, let’s focus on student galleries. I just checked out my old uni’s exhibition, which was pretty cool. Admittedly, I was more fascinated by the Fine Arts than the Visual Communication work, but that’s just between you and me. It’s on until the 28th of November. Also, Northland have their show coming up on the 27th, and there are a couple of others worth checking out. But that’s just me and my peeps… tell us about you and yours…

Muto

One of the things about working for a creative company is that some of the group emails that people send are actually bearable. Anyway, one of the folks at my work pointed out a link to this:

muto

The Blu blog has more amazing pieces.

More Justice served

DVNO

Another re-hash post of sorts: Last year I raved about how good Justice’s video clip for their single Do The Dance was. This year they’ve done it again (or at least design group So-Me have) with DVNO. Another clip full of typographic brilliance. (Found via New Work.)

Speaking of such, here’s some more great 3D type (via NiceFuckingGraphics), and some ‘Breathtaking Typographic Posters‘ (sent via email from my friend Olivia). Also, Typographica has an article on a guy named Jeremy Pattis, who did his thesis on ‘Twenty-Six Types of Animals’… pun included and all.

Something in the Air

Could this be the future of the application? (Sim you’re right I think!)

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air/

I downloaded it and have installed some applications and I must say I’m impressed. They still have a slightly ‘clunky’ feel about them but there is some potential here. For those of you who can’t be bothered visiting the site or downloading the software (and some sample apps), I’ll give a very brief introduction. It is basically a framework for writing powerful custom applications which have a desktop presence as well as web interactivity. Not unlike a widget.

The official description goes like this:

“Adobe® AIR™ is a cross-operating system runtime that allows web application developers to use their existing web development skills (HTML, Javascript, Adobe Flash®, Adobe Flex™, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications to the desktop.”

So, keep your eyes to the Air, I think we’ll be seeing more of it in 2008.

Trailing In Front

The Madman Screening Room

[WARNING: The Following contains blatant advertising. But you're used to that... what, with the whole Simantic Mac Blog thing, right?]

Anyway, a couple of the guys who work in the same room I do created an awesome new Screening Room (the trailers section of the Madman site) which was officially launched yesterday. The Screening Room now has much higher resolution clips that download super quick. Check it out! It’s better than fried chicken… well, maybe not fried chicken, but it sure beats YouTube.

Free Play 2007

Anyone here interested in going to Free Play 2007? It’s an indy gaming conference to be held at ACME on the 18th of August.

This is from the site:

Free Play caters for independent and DIY game developers, creatively frustrated professionals, game development students, digital artists and new media academics.

Let me know if anyone is interested, I wouldn’t mind checking it out.

Do the Dance

This is probably my favourite music video clip going around at the moment. It’s a track called D.A.N.C.E. by Justice and features a beautifully playful video, directed by a French duo called Jonas and François of irene75.

Videology-tv.com has an interview with the creators of the clip.

Ich wähl die Nummer

It was built for Microsoft, but hey, we can’t all be perfect. Sim, where’s the multimedia tag? I’m loathed to put this under ‘tech’.

Currently listening to Computer Liebe by Kraftwerk. The chorus is as follows:

Computer Liebe, Computer Liebe
Computer Liebe, Computer Liebe
Computer Liebe, Computer Liebe
