The Business Trip

The lads at Aquafruzzl have just released to the public, their latest short film, The Business Trip. Directed by Scott Alexander, produced by Stuart Moulds and starring Elke Osadnik and Dave Kenyon, the film was shot over a few days with digital SLR cameras. I was honoured to be on set for the shoot and I must say it was quite a feat.

From the Aquafruzzl blog:

Watch our latest short film…. and this time it’s a comedy! THE BUSINESS TRIP was our first shoot with our new Canon 7D cameras, and boy did we learn a lot about them.

Thanks to everyone involved in the film – it could not have been made without you. It was a mighty hard slog to complete in the time frame we had, but no corners were cut and we are stoked with the final result

Forward it to your friends, work colleagues, lovers and local bishop – we just want as many people to see and enjoy it as possible.

Enjoy.

Team Aquafruzzl.

Spacious Thoughts

Spacious Thoughts — N.A.S.A. featuring Tom Waits & Kool Keith

Hip producers? Check. Street cred for hip hop market? Mic check. Old-school music legend? Check. Paint splats, 3D, illustrated animation. Check. Check. Check. Cheesy checklist? Yep.

Seriously though, it may tick the obvious boxes, but it still works and looks great. But I think I’m most impressed by the nice lip-synching.

Fluorescent Hill may just owe at least a nod to Jeff Soto.

Interview with Matthew Weiner

madmen

We all love a good TV show, even Lateline’s Leigh Sales. So tonight when I saw that there was an interview on Lateline with Mad Men creator and producer Matthew Weiner (rhymes with diner), I almost jumped out of my seat. I know, Lateline right… I didn’t think so either!

matthew-weiner

In the interview Weiner discusses the 1950s and 60s, American culture, Tony Soprano, social subversion, sexism, the medium that is the television series and the dynamics between his “unknown” actors. Really interesting stuff.

If you missed out, you can catch up on ABC’s iView or check the Lateline site for today’s program (Friday 6th November).

Bright light from a distant star

What is it with hip hop that lends itself to fucking awesome motion-graphics-based video clips? You could write a whole thesis on Kanye West clips alone! From the Good Life to the rotoscoped Heartless to the mpeg-compressed Welcome To Heartbreak. Not to mention the exquisitely animated Good Morning.

Two other clips that I’ve recently seen that have been nothing short of inspiring are for Talib Kweli’s Hot Thing/In The Mood, directed by Bernard Gourley, and Mos Def’s latest, Casa Bey, directed by Coodie and Chiké. Time to fire up that little “AE” icon in my dock :)

Screening Room +

screeningroom_plus

Some more propaganda… the guys I work with are amazing! They’ve just completed the feat of a new video section on the Madman site, called The Screening Room +. This is like the old one, but now feautres full episodes of anime including Fullmetal Alchemist, Darker Than Black and School Rumble. You may remember that I mentioned when they first launched the widescreen high-quality trailers. The new format includes episodes too. So what are you waiting for?…

Where The Wild Things Are

where the wild things are

For those of you who have been under a rock (on the moon), Spike Jonze and co. have been trying to get a film adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are up and running for a looong time. In fact, they started shooting way back in 2006 in a little town called Melbourne. There have been images floating around for some time and there’s now a trailer on the Apple site, or a Flash version, s’il vous voulez. Without making the rest of this post a blatant copy of the Wikipedia entry, I’ll just say that I can’t wait to hear James Gandolfini’s character. Madone!

Why Foxtel sucks

nba_kobe

Really, I don’t have to tell you why. But I’ll give you a couple of reasons anyway. We’ve got Foxtel at work, which I watch on average once a week during a lunch break. Amongst a multitude of terrible American reality/drama/docos as well as the occasional bit of good comedy, there isn’t much on. And when there is, it sucks. For example, the other week when the Superbowl was on, the standard Foxtel package could only provide a 4:3 ratio and pretty low-quality standard definition. So we switched over to Ten HD: widescreen and high-def… and free. So now that Ten have started showing the NBA a couple of times a week (the screenshots are from the tuner on my computer) — and, with the announcement of their sports channel to officially arrive in late March — I can’t see why you’d fork out even $40 a month, let alone more for HD. Of course you need an HD tuner. But for around $100 for a one-off, it’s not bad.

nba_lebron

Since ABC and SBS have three channels — including local, HD and ABC2/SBS News — and the Ten network has now at least three channels, let’s hope the others follow suit with new content. Of course, 7 and 9 each have a single HD channel and there is some controversy over ONE HD being a sports-only channel. But we’ll see what happens. I mean, I was going to name this post, Why TV sucks, but hopefully that’s about to change… and I didn’t even mention DVDs, web videos or torrents (whoops!). I’m just sick of (and confused by) those vague Freeview ads. By the looks of things, so are Kobe and LeBron.

Prodigy clips

I saw the Prodigy with a friend on Thursday night at The Palace (Metro). It was insane! Somewhere in between Voodoo People and Out Of Space, I lost my breath. There was a lot of stuff off Fat Of The Land and Jilted Generation, but unfortunately — and understandably — nothing off the heavily criticized Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned. There was also a fair few tracks off the upcoming album, which although I’m not a huge fan, seem to translate well live.

Anyway, I thought I’d do a flashback to a couple of their video clips… my faves. For me, these two are up there with what Gondry did for the White Stripes, what Spike Jonze did for The Pharcyde, what Mark Romanek did for Nine Inch Nails, what Chris Cunningham did for Aphex Twin and Björk… or those nice Justice clips. Both clips are brutal, but reveal themselves in the final seconds. Voodoo People (Ron Scalpello) is crazy, both visually and with the soundtrack of the Pendulum remix. And Smack My Bitch Up (Jonas Åkerlund), well, it speaks for itself. But watch the whole thing. Great stuff.
