Spacious Thoughts — N.A.S.A. featuring Tom Waits & Kool Keith
Hip producers? Check. Street cred for hip hop market? Mic check. Old-school music legend? Check. Paint splats, 3D, illustrated animation. Check. Check. Check. Cheesy checklist? Yep.
Seriously though, it may tick the obvious boxes, but it still works and looks great. But I think I’m most impressed by the nice lip-synching.
Fluorescent Hill may just owe at least a nod to Jeff Soto.

What is it with hip hop that lends itself to fucking awesome motion-graphics-based video clips? You could write a whole thesis on Kanye West clips alone! From the Good Life to the rotoscoped Heartless to the mpeg-compressed Welcome To Heartbreak. Not to mention the exquisitely animated Good Morning.

Two other clips that I’ve recently seen that have been nothing short of inspiring are for Talib Kweli’s Hot Thing/In The Mood, directed by Bernard Gourley, and Mos Def’s latest, Casa Bey, directed by Coodie and Chiké. Time to fire up that little “AE” icon in my dock

Some more propaganda… the guys I work with are amazing! They’ve just completed the feat of a new video section on the Madman site, called The Screening Room +. This is like the old one, but now feautres full episodes of anime including Fullmetal Alchemist, Darker Than Black and School Rumble. You may remember that I mentioned when they first launched the widescreen high-quality trailers. The new format includes episodes too. So what are you waiting for?…

I saw the Prodigy with a friend on Thursday night at The Palace (Metro). It was insane! Somewhere in between Voodoo People and Out Of Space, I lost my breath. There was a lot of stuff off Fat Of The Land and Jilted Generation, but unfortunately — and understandably — nothing off the heavily criticized Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned. There was also a fair few tracks off the upcoming album, which although I’m not a huge fan, seem to translate well live.
Anyway, I thought I’d do a flashback to a couple of their video clips… my faves. For me, these two are up there with what Gondry did for the White Stripes, what Spike Jonze did for The Pharcyde, what Mark Romanek did for Nine Inch Nails, what Chris Cunningham did for Aphex Twin and Björk… or those nice Justice clips. Both clips are brutal, but reveal themselves in the final seconds. Voodoo People (Ron Scalpello) is crazy, both visually and with the soundtrack of the Pendulum remix. And Smack My Bitch Up (Jonas Åkerlund), well, it speaks for itself. But watch the whole thing. Great stuff.

One of the things about working for a creative company is that some of the group emails that people send are actually bearable. Anyway, one of the folks at my work pointed out a link to this:

The Blu blog has more amazing pieces.

Another re-hash post of sorts: Last year I raved about how good Justice’s video clip for their single Do The Dance was. This year they’ve done it again (or at least design group So-Me have) with DVNO. Another clip full of typographic brilliance. (Found via New Work.)
Speaking of such, here’s some more great 3D type (via NiceFuckingGraphics), and some ‘Breathtaking Typographic Posters‘ (sent via email from my friend Olivia). Also, Typographica has an article on a guy named Jeremy Pattis, who did his thesis on ‘Twenty-Six Types of Animals’… pun included and all.

[WARNING: The Following contains blatant advertising. But you're used to that... what, with the whole Simantic Mac Blog thing, right?]
Anyway, a couple of the guys who work in the same room I do created an awesome new Screening Room (the trailers section of the Madman site) which was officially launched yesterday. The Screening Room now has much higher resolution clips that download super quick. Check it out! It’s better than fried chicken… well, maybe not fried chicken, but it sure beats YouTube.

This is probably my favourite music video clip going around at the moment. It’s a track called D.A.N.C.E. by Justice and features a beautifully playful video, directed by a French duo called Jonas and François of irene75.
Videology-tv.com has an interview with the creators of the clip.
