The lads at Aquafruzzl have just released to the public, their latest short film, The Business Trip. Directed by Scott Alexander, produced by Stuart Moulds and starring Elke Osadnik and Dave Kenyon, the film was shot over a few days with digital SLR cameras. I was honoured to be on set for the shoot and I must say it was quite a feat.
From the Aquafruzzl blog:
Watch our latest short film…. and this time it’s a comedy! THE BUSINESS TRIP was our first shoot with our new Canon 7D cameras, and boy did we learn a lot about them.
Thanks to everyone involved in the film – it could not have been made without you. It was a mighty hard slog to complete in the time frame we had, but no corners were cut and we are stoked with the final result
Forward it to your friends, work colleagues, lovers and local bishop – we just want as many people to see and enjoy it as possible.
Enjoy.
Team Aquafruzzl.

For those of you who have been under a rock (on the moon), Spike Jonze and co. have been trying to get a film adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are up and running for a looong time. In fact, they started shooting way back in 2006 in a little town called Melbourne. There have been images floating around for some time and there’s now a trailer on the Apple site, or a Flash version, s’il vous voulez. Without making the rest of this post a blatant copy of the Wikipedia entry, I’ll just say that I can’t wait to hear James Gandolfini’s character. Madone!

A brilliant resource for all things title sequencing:

All the classics are there, plus a few others. My favourite title sequence is pictured above. Found via New Work

There’s something about this film that hits home and hits hard. I saw it with Steve last night and we both thought it was well worth the watch. Adapted from a book by Jon Krakauer of the same name, and depicting the true events of Christopher McCandless, Into the Wild raises and analyses issues about society, humanity, nature, love and religion. But it does so tactfully. I can see why David and Margaret gave it four and a half stars and five stars respectively. Both the film, directed by Sean Penn, and the accompanying soundtrack by Eddie Vedder are extremely powerful. Highly recommend.

[WARNING: The Following contains blatant advertising. But you're used to that... what, with the whole Simantic Mac Blog thing, right?]
Anyway, a couple of the guys who work in the same room I do created an awesome new Screening Room (the trailers section of the Madman site) which was officially launched yesterday. The Screening Room now has much higher resolution clips that download super quick. Check it out! It’s better than fried chicken… well, maybe not fried chicken, but it sure beats YouTube.

Yeah, I know… lame title. You’ll get why in a sec. Basically just a quick plug for Character, RMIT’s “series of public forums discussing the social and cultural aspects of graphic design and typography”. Character 4 — this year’s incarnation — focuses on film making and includes a range of speakers as well the Australian premiere of Helvetica. I’ve never been to one of these events and — despite the fact that this thing is organised by the likes of the ever-solemn Stephen Banham — would love to see what it’s like. So let me know (like really soon) if you wanna go too. Tickets are $20 or $12 if you’re a student. It’s on 22nd July at ACMI, but seating is limited.

Just before I go, the first issue of the little Simantic webzine, Antic, is out next month. Submissions are supposed to close this Friday, but I’ll allow you to get stuff in by the end of the weekend (Sunday 24th) if you’re pressed for time. Just email through what you have. Thanks guys!

I’m not going to go into great detail about the newly released Final Cut Studio 2. But there is a new addition to the (post) production suite, a colour grading application appropriately called Color. This release will no doubt strengthen Apple’s credibility in the film and media industries and prove that they truly are competition for companies like Avid and Adobe. On top of this, Apple has announced new cross-platform server software specific to managing Final Cut Studio workflows. Apple has also said that — due to development of the iPhone — Leopard (Mac OS X, 10.5) has been pushed back to be shipped in October… dammit!
In other tech news, Adobe will release Creative Suite 3 today in the US, and in Australia it seems to be within the month. Microsoft has a minor update for their most backwards piece of software, Outlook 2007, as well as unveiling Silverlight (formerly WPF/E or whatever the fuck it was called), to compete with the upcoming Adobe Media Player (Flash and Apollo platforms). Speaking of Apollo, the Scoble Show site has some new vids with the people who made Apollo and CS3. And Engadget and Gizmodo have stuff about the other stuff I was talking about.
